How to Set Up a Stage Timer on a TV or Projector

How to Set Up a Stage Timer on a TV or Projector

A timer on your laptop is useful for the operator. A large timer on a TV or projector helps speakers see how much time they have left without interrupting their presentation.

With MyStageClock, you can keep the timer controls on your laptop and show a separate timer display on another screen. This guide explains how to connect your equipment, open the correct display and check everything before your event.

What you need

For a laptop connected directly to a TV or projector, prepare:

  • A laptop with an internet connection.

  • A TV, monitor or projector.

  • An HDMI cable.

  • A compatible video adapter if your laptop does not have an HDMI port.

  • Your MyStageClock event room.

You can also use a second computer connected to the screen, or a compatible smart TV browser.

Step 1: Prepare your timer in MyStageClock

Open MyStageClock and create or open your event room.

Add your sessions and set their durations. Give each session a clear name, such as “Opening Remarks,” “Keynote Presentation” or “Panel Discussion.”

Before connecting the external screen, briefly start and pause a timer to confirm that your controls work.

Step 2: Open the TV and projector setup guide

Click Set up TV / Projector beside Open Display.

The guide explains three ways to show your timer:

  • Connect your laptop directly using HDMI.

  • Open the display link in a compatible smart TV browser.

  • Open the display link on another computer connected to the screen.

The button provides setup instructions and access to your display link. You still connect the screen through your equipment or open the link on the receiving device.

Method 1: Connect your laptop using HDMI

Connect the cable

Connect your laptop to the TV or projector using HDMI. If necessary, use an adapter that supports video output.

Turn on the external screen and select the input matching the cable connection, such as HDMI 1 or HDMI 2.

Extend your desktop

An extended desktop lets you keep the MyStageClock controller on your laptop while showing the timer on the external screen.

On Windows, press Windows + P and choose Extend. On a Mac, open System Settings → Displays and configure the external screen as an extended display.

Open your timer display

In MyStageClock, select the display type you want from the display settings.

Open the setup guide and click Open selected display. If the browser opens the display in a new tab, drag that tab out into a separate window.

Move the display window onto the TV or projector. Keep the controller window on your laptop.

Use the display’s fullscreen option, where available, or your browser’s fullscreen mode to make the timer easier to read.

Test the connection

Start the timer from your laptop. Confirm that the external screen updates when you start, pause and reset it.

Check readability from the speaker’s position. A timer that looks clear at the control desk may be too small or poorly positioned for the person on stage.

Method 2: Use a compatible smart TV browser

If your smart TV has a suitable web browser, you can try opening the timer display directly on the TV.

  1. Connect the TV to the internet.

  2. In MyStageClock, choose the required display type.

  3. Click Set up TV / Projector, then Copy display link.

  4. Enter the complete display URL in the TV browser.

  5. Enable fullscreen if the browser supports it.

  6. Control the timer from your laptop.

Smart TV browser support varies. Test your particular TV before the event. If the display does not load or update correctly, use a laptop connected through HDMI.

Method 3: Use another computer connected to the screen

You can keep the operator’s laptop at the control desk and use a second computer beside the TV or projector.

Connect the second computer to the screen, open the copied display link in its browser and move the timer window onto the external display.

Both computers need internet access for this MyStageClock setup. The operator controls the timer from the main laptop.

Share the display link with the person setting up the screen so they can open the intended timer view.

Troubleshooting your stage timer display

The TV says “No signal”

Check that the cable is securely connected and the TV is set to the correct input. If you use an adapter, confirm that it supports video output.

The TV shows the controller

Move the separate timer display window onto the TV. Use extended desktop mode so the laptop and external screen can show different windows.

The wrong timer or stage appears

Check the event room, selected stage and display link. Open a fresh link for the intended display.

The timer stops updating

Check the internet connection on the device running the display. Keep the browser open and prevent the computer from going to sleep during the event.

The display is difficult to read

Use fullscreen, improve the screen position and check visibility from the speaker’s location. For a projector, test readability under the lighting conditions you will use during the event.

Before your event starts

Run a short rehearsal with the actual equipment:

  • Confirm that the correct timer is visible.

  • Test start, pause and reset.

  • Test any speaker messages you intend to use.

  • Connect laptops to power.

  • Adjust sleep settings so screens stay awake.

  • Check the timer from the speaker’s position.

  • Keep a spare cable or adapter nearby.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a smart TV?

No. A TV with a compatible video input can show the timer from a connected laptop. The laptop runs MyStageClock.

Can I control the timer without showing the controls to the speaker?

Yes. Open the timer display in a separate window and use an extended desktop. Keep the controller on your laptop and the display on the external screen.

Can I use a projector instead of a TV?

Yes. Connect your computer to the projector using a supported video connection, then move the timer display onto the projected screen.

Does “Set up TV / Projector” automatically connect to my TV?

The button opens the setup guide and provides display actions. Follow the instructions to connect through HDMI or open the display link on a compatible device.

Set up your next event timer

Open MyStageClock, prepare your sessions and click Set up TV / Projector.

Test your display before guests arrive so your speakers can follow the countdown and your operator can manage the event from the control desk.
