How to Calculate Your Speech Time

  1. Paste your speech into the text box. If you do not have a finished script, enter an estimated word count instead.

  2. Enter your speaking pace in words per minute.

  3. Add extra seconds for pauses, audience reactions or transitions.

  4. Review the estimated duration and compare the alternative speaking speeds.

When you paste text, the calculator uses that text instead of the manual word count. It counts words separated by spaces.

How the Speech Time Estimate Works

The calculator divides your word count by your chosen speaking speed, then adds your extra pause time.

For example, a 650-word speech delivered at 130 words per minute takes approximately five minutes. Adding 30 seconds of pauses produces an estimated duration of five minutes and 30 seconds.

This is a planning estimate. Your delivery may change when you explain a complex point, pause for emphasis or respond to the audience.

Choose a Pace That Suits Your Audience

Try several speaking speeds rather than relying on one estimate. The calculator compares 100, 130 and 160 words per minute, and you can enter a different pace for your own calculation.

A slower setting can help you plan a speech with deliberate pauses. A faster setting shows how the same script fits into a shorter slot. Choose a pace you can deliver clearly and comfortably.

What to Do If Your Speech Is Too Long

Start by removing repeated ideas and examples that do not support your main message. Keep enough time for the introduction and conclusion.

If your speaking slot includes questions, subtract that time before planning the speech itself. Our Presentation Time Planner can help you divide your available time between the opening, main points, conclusion and questions.
